Mahjong is a tile-based game for four players built around drawing, discarding, and building sets — think rummy, but with beautifully illustrated tiles and a satisfying click. It originated in 19th-century China and has been played in American living rooms since the 1920s. American Mahjong is the version most commonly played here, using the National Mah Jongg League card to define winning hands each year.

• Suits: Three suits — Dots (circles), Bam (bamboo stalks), and Crak (Chinese characters). Each suit runs 1 through 9, four tiles each.
• Winds & Dragons: Honor tiles representing the four winds (East, West, North, South) and three dragons (White, Green, Red).
• Flowers & Jokers: American Mahjong includes Jokers — wild tiles that can stand in for any suited tile in a set. These don't exist in most other versions and are a big reason American Mahjong is friendlier for beginners.

Build a complete winning hand of 14 tiles matching one of the patterns on the official NMJL card. Draw a tile, decide whether to keep it, discard one. Claim other players' discards to complete your sets. First to a complete hand calls "Mahjong!" and wins the round.

A great game club feels effortless to the people attending it — which means the host has done their work quietly beforehand. Most of that work is simple, and most of it happens before anyone arrives.

• Know the rules cold. You don't need to be the best player in the room, but you do need to resolve rules questions without looking them up.
• Prepare a "teach" that takes under ten minutes. Practice it. The game starts when the teach ends — the faster you get people playing, the better the club.
• Send a reminder a few days out. Life is busy. Consistent turnout requires consistent nudging.
• Arrive early enough to set up the space so your first arrivals don't walk into chaos.

• Watch for players who are confused and quietly help them without interrupting the game for everyone else.
• Keep energy up by keeping pace. Long dead time between turns is the enemy of a good game club.
• At the end of the club, ask: what should we play next time? It gives everyone ownership and takes one decision off your plate.

People will forget whether they won. They won't forget whether they had fun. A game club where everyone loses gracefully and laughs often is more successful than a perfectly run tournament where half the table leaves frustrated. Calibrate accordingly.

The right game for a game club isn't necessarily the best game — it's the game most likely to keep everyone at the table engaged from start to finish. A shorter, slightly simpler game with high interaction often produces a better club than a deeper game where half the table checks out by round three.

• Teach time under 15 minutes. If you can't get new players into the game quickly, you've already lost half the room.
• Player interaction. Games where players affect each other's outcomes create stories. Games where everyone plays in isolation create parallel experiences that don't feel shared.
• Meaningful decisions. Players should feel like their choices matter — but not feel paralyzed by too many options. The Goldilocks zone is real.
• Session length under 90 minutes. Unless your group is unusually committed, long games thin out toward the end. Leave people wanting more.
• Mixed skill tolerance. The best game club games let experienced players be better without making new players feel hopeless.

The teach is the most underrated part of game club. A bad teach produces confused, checked-out players who politely finish the game and never come back. A good teach produces players who are excited to play again before the first round ends.

• Start with the goal. Before explaining a single rule, tell everyone what winning looks like. Players learn rules faster when they know what they're building toward.
• Teach the minimum to start. Cover only what's needed to take a first turn. Save edge cases for when they actually come up.
• Walk through a practice round. For games with more than a few mechanics, one open-hand practice round where everyone explains their thinking out loud is worth ten minutes of verbal explanation.
• Invite questions before they compound. Pause after each phase of the teach and ask if anything needs clarification — don't wait until the end when confusion has built up.

• Watch new players' body language. Confusion looks like hesitation, scanning the board, and watching others rather than making moves. Check in quietly.
• Celebrate good plays out loud. When a new player does something smart, name it. It's the single fastest way to build their confidence.
• At the end, ask new players what surprised them — their answers often reveal what the teach missed and what to cover next time.
