For Authors
Getting Your Book into [ash-ling]

We love supporting authors — local, regional, and beyond. We're a small store with limited shelf space and a carefully curated selection, so we're thoughtful about what we carry. Here's how we work and what we look for.

01
Traditionally Published — via Distributor
If your book is published through a traditional publisher and distributed through a major distributor such as Ingram, your publisher, or another industry standard channel, we can order it through our normal buying process. This is the simplest path to our shelves.
Send us your distributor name and ISBN
Include a brief pitch and why it fits our store
We'll review and reach out if it's a good fit
Standard industry terms apply (40–55% discount, returnable)
02
Self-Published — Consignment
We do not purchase self-published books outright. However, we do accept self-published titles on consignment, which means we display your book and pay you when copies sell. We use consignment as a way to see whether a title is a good long-term fit for our shelves — no upfront risk on either side.
We accept 3–5 copies to start
60% to author / 40% to [ash-ling] on each sale
Payment monthly with inventory report
90-day initial period — we reassess together
Author responsible for restocking when needed
How We Think About It
A Genuine Partnership

Getting carried at [ash-ling] isn't just about the book — it's about the relationship. We're a community bookstore, which means we think about whether a book will genuinely resonate with our readers, whether the author is invested in making it succeed here, and whether we can be proud to have it on our shelves.

We're especially drawn to regional voices, Appalachian stories, Southern literature, and books that reflect the communities around us. That said, we carry a wide range of titles and are always open to a good pitch.

What We Need
Book Requirements

Whether you're submitting for distributor ordering or consignment, your book needs to meet these basics before we can carry it.

ISBN & Barcode
Your book must have a registered ISBN and a scannable barcode printed on the back cover. This is essential for inventory tracking and ordering.
Title on Spine
The book title and author name must be printed on the spine. Books without a readable spine get lost on shelves — customers and staff won't be able to find them.
Professional Presentation
Cover design, interior formatting, and overall production should look professionally finished. A book that doesn't look the part won't sell, no matter how good the writing is.
Competitive Pricing
Your retail price should be consistent with similar titles in your genre. Overpriced books don't move. The same price must be offered at all retail outlets — no undercutting on Amazon.
Your Promotion Commitment
We expect authors to actively promote their book. Tag us on social media, mention [ash-ling] in your marketing, drive your audience to buy locally. This partnership only works if you show up for it.
A Sell Sheet
Include a one-page sell sheet with your inquiry: title, author, ISBN, price, distributor or publisher, publication date, brief description, and any press or notable endorsements.

Events & Signings
Book Releases, Signings & Author Events

We love hosting author events — they're one of the most meaningful things an indie bookstore can do. But events require real partnership and advance planning. Here's how they work.

In-Store Events
Book Releases & Signings

We host book release parties, signings, and author readings at [ash-ling] Booksellers. These events are free for the author to propose but require that your book is or will be carried in our store.

All book sales at the event must go through [ash-ling] — we handle the register, you sign the books
Author brings the energy — we bring the space, the promotion, and the staff
We split event proceeds on the same consignment or standard terms as your shelf arrangement
Author must actively promote the event to their own audience — share on social media, email list, and local networks
Propose events at least 6–8 weeks in advance to allow proper promotion
Authors should provide a guest list estimate — we prepare accordingly
Important Rules
How Book Sales Work at Events

This is the one thing that causes the most confusion, so we want to be clear: all book purchases at [ash-ling] events must be made through [ash-ling] Booksellers. This is non-negotiable.

Authors may not sell books directly to attendees at our events
Authors may not bring their own payment systems (Venmo, Square, etc.) to sell alongside us
Books must not be sold cheaper anywhere else than they are at our store
Signed books from our event cannot later be sold at lower prices at other venues
Authors are welcome to sign stock ahead of events for in-store display
We may also promote signed copies through our website after the event
Author Tips
What Makes a Successful Partnership

The authors who do best with indie bookstores are the ones who treat it like a real collaboration. Here's what we've seen work.

1
Promote Us Back
Tag [ash-ling] when you post about your book. Tell your audience to buy locally. Link to our store on your website. The more traffic you send us, the more we can do for you.
2
Be a Real Customer Too
Come in. Buy books. Talk to staff. The authors we love most are the ones who are already part of the community before they ever ask for shelf space.
3
Be Realistic About Events
Even great events may sell fewer copies than you hope. The value of a bookstore event is building community, not just moving units. Come for the conversation, not just the sales.
4
Keep Us in the Loop
Check in on your inventory. Let us know when you're doing other local events so we can coordinate. Authors who communicate are authors we keep on the shelves.

Our Small Press Imprint
Aisling Books

In 2008, Toccoa natives opened [ash-ling] Booksellers in the heart of the city's historic downtown, inspired by a lifelong love of literature and a deep connection to their ancestral hometown. What began as a cozy haven for readers soon grew into a vibrant cultural space, bringing together books, community, and conversation.

The name ashling comes from the Irish word aisling (pronounced "ASH-ling"), meaning "dream" or "vision."

In Irish poetry, an aisling is a dreamlike encounter — often with a mysterious woman who symbolizes the spirit of Ireland, calling the dreamer to renewal and hope. The founders chose this name not only for its lyrical beauty, but because they saw their bookstore as a vision for something more: a place where stories awaken, where voices rise, and where imagination has a home.

Ashling's next chapter came with the launch of its own small press, Aisling Books, dedicated to showcasing voices from the Appalachian foothills and beyond. The press's inaugural release, Sautee Shadows, from a regional writer, captures the spirit, struggles, and stories of life in the rural South.

[ash-ling] Booksellers and Aisling Books remain devoted to the power of books to deepen empathy and spark dialogue. With a growing catalog of nonfiction, fiction, regional history, and social commentary, Ashling continues to be a gathering place for ideas — grounded in place, open to the world.
